Woman, 75, left trapped in car after hit-and-run smash
VAN DRIVER AND PASSENGER RUN AWAY AFTER HEAD-ON IMPACT
A 75-YEAR-OLD woman was left trapped inside her car following a smash in north Manchester.
The woman’s family say she suffered eight broken ribs - as well as lacerations and bruising - and remains in hospital.
It is understood the elderly woman had been waiting to turn right at a junction when a black van crashed head-on into her.
The woman’s black Volkswagen Lupo was sent spinning, with the pensioner trapped inside from the impact of the smash.
The driver of the van – a Volkswa- gen Caddy – got out of the vehicle and ran away with their passenger, police said.
Emergency services were called to Broadway, near the junction with Moston Lane East, in Moston, on Tuesday night.
An off-duty nurse stopped to help the woman and tried to free her from the smoking vehicle.
She was then treated by fire and ambulance crews before being put on a stretcher and the woman’s loved ones are now appealing for anyone with information to contact police.
“She’s in agony because of her injuries,” a family member said.
“She’s currently in a trauma bed in hospital.
“She had been on her way home from visiting family when the van came from the Moston Lane East area and crashed into the front of her car.
“Two young lads, we aren’t sure on their exact age, got out of the car, they’d both hit their heads on the windscreen and had injuries, they saw she was trapped and ran off behind Broadway baths. “They just left her.” The victim’s family say she is hooked up to a morphine drip and is awaiting more scans to see if she will need surgery on her ribs.
They shared photos showing the aftermath of the smash on social media.
A spokesman for GMP said an investigation has been launched. No arrests have been made.
They said: “We were called just after 7.40pm to reports of a collision at the junction of Broadway and Moston Lane East.
“Two men made off from the scene. No arrests have been made.”
Officers on the case are also appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to get in touch.
