SUPPORTERS have rallied in support of Coronation Street star Cherylee Houston after she was subjected to horrific verbal abuse in the street.

The Corrie favourite, who plays Izzy Armstrong in the soap, was in shock after a stranger shouted an offensive word at the actress while she was crossing the road.

Her friends and co-stars at the ITV1 soap rushed to support the soap star after she tweeted about her ordeal.

Wheelchair user Cherylee wrote: “Was just crossing the road and a car beeped and me and a man shouted ‘s ****** ’ at me. Wow.”

Georgia Taylor, who plays Toyah Battersby, said: “Oh darling this is horrendous. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I hope you’re okay, lovely one xxx”

And Cherylee, who has played Izzy for eight years, replied to her co-star: “I’m fine thanks lovely, just shocked that this sort of hatred is still going on.”

Kate Ford, who plays Tracy Barlow, said: “Something very wrong with that man darling. How horrible it must be to be him xx”

Cherylee told her concerned followers: “I was trying to find the logic to explain his ridiculousness, but I was just open mouthed.”

Asked if she had said anything back to the perpetrator, she said: “No I was just so stunned. I had logical explanations running through my head of how to explain his ignorance to him but I remained just stunned x.”

One outraged follower said: “Wow, I didn’t realise that people from the stone age could drive cars!”

Another follower Elizabeth Newman wrote: “This is not acceptable. Please can we work harder together to build a brighter world... please can we send her love and hope this evening...

“I’ve had this before. It leaves you feeling shocked, stunned and scared to live in our world.”

And Dave Toole commented: “Can’t believe that this s*** still happens in the 21st Century.”

Cherylee, who made history by becoming Coronation Street’s first disabled actress, has the rare connective tissue disorder Ehlers-Danlos, the same as her popular character Izzy.

Pioneering Cherylee set up the drama project Triple C – The Creative Confidence Collective – with the motto ‘To Never Leave Anyone Behind,’ so the next generation of budding actors don’t have barriers to the arts.
