Teddy bears’ picnic to mark World Breastfeeding Week
A BREASTFEEDING organisation is hosting a picnic in Salford in support of World Breastfeeding Week.
BOOBS, which stands for Be Open On Breastfeeding in Salford, is an independent group campaigning to promote breastfeeding and to encourage mums to share their experiences in monthly meet-ups around Salford.
Kimberly Bond, managing director, told the M.E.N.: “Our aim is to give mums support from when they are pregnant and aim to inform and educate all parents so they are safe, happy and comfortable in their breastfeeding journey.”
Their current scheme, BOOBS Approved, aims to encourage venues such as restaurants and cafes to show support for breastfeeding mums.
The latest event is a teddy bears’ picnic and will take place on August 3 in Ordsall.
It will feature kids’ crafts and a big breastfeeding-friendly area where mums can comfortably feed their children.
“I think there is still some prejudice and people are still being made to feel uncomfortable breastfeeding in public,” said Faye Stafford, mum of two and BOOBS volunteer.
The picnic is due to begin at 11am on the green outside The Tatton (formerly Ordsall Cafe) and finish at 2pm.
Parents can buy tickets for £2, not including lunch, or adult tickets for £7 and child tickets for £4 that come with a lunchbox provided by Bambino cafe.
Camilla Malinverni, an event management intern, said: “New mums often need support in the early days and are isolated and stuck at home, especially if they are breastfeeding. We want to create a safe and welcoming environment where parents can come together for a few hours and share their stories over lunch. We know that hearing honest accounts of parenthood and breastfeeding really helps those that are struggling to see there is a way through.”
