‘Digital technology key in driving Co-Op ambition’
THE Co-Op has appointed the co-founder of music app Shazam to help boost its digital and technology position.
Rahul Powar will take the role as non-executive director.
Powar made his name and fortune as principal technical architect for Shazam Entertainment, a UK-based provider of music recognition and search
services. A technologist and entrepreneur, Powar had founded Apsmart in 2009 to bring experienced strategy, design and execution services to the newly relevant mobile App phenomenon. Since then he served as VP/head of advanced products at Thomson Reuters Corporation, which he joined when his start-up Apsmart was acquired in 2012 and is currently founder and CEO of Red Sift, a venture-backed cognitive cybersecurity platform. Allan Leighton, the Co-op’s independent non-executive chair, said: “We have a clear ambition to grow our Co-op and increase the positive impact we can have in communities throughout the UK. “Digital technology will play a key role in driving our commercial ambition, while helping us to connect more with the communities where we operate. Rahul brings with him a wealth of experience in this area and his experience and insight will be hugely valuable as we progress and execute our plans.”
