Aces lose it in closing stages as Wolves steal the victory

- By HAYLEY BROMLEY @MENSports

THERE was no holding back for Belle Vue in their 49-41 battle with Wolverhampton yesterday but their best efforts were not enough to earn them even a consolation point.

After last week’s disappointing rain-off in Manchester, the Rentruck Aces were raring to go but the meeting was put on hold after the track ambulance was delayed in arriving.

Once things got underway the visitors had work to do as the Wolves took control, but not so emphatically as to concern Belle Vue who kept things to well within close margins.

It wasn’t until the closing stages that the hosts extended their lead and prevented the men from Manchester from taking the consolation point that, says Craig Cook, they deserved.

He said: “The boys worked extremely hard but it wasn’t enough to come away with even a consolation point. Losing by 8, it’s not a huge deficit but it’s enough to make a difference.

“We’re not taking anything away from Wolverhampton though. They’re no slouches. They’re a hell of a team, especially at reserve and they are very powerful on their home track.

“Conditions at Monmore were fantastic. The track was great to ride and it gave us some great racing. It’s just a shame, as we say, that we couldn’t run them a little bit closer.

“It has given us even greater incentive to put those wrongs to right on Wednesday. We’ll take this one on the chin and go home with clear minds ready to do what needs to be done.”

The Rentruck Aces return to Manchester tomorrow in the Premiership before the hotlyanticipated Summer Speed Saturday lands at Belle Vue this weekend, July 28.
