MANCHESTER is braced for the hottest day of the year so far today as the searing summer heatwave continues.

Temperatures were expected to hit 31C (87F) across the region, a sizzling spike of five degrees above yesterday’s levels.

A heat warning issued by Public Health England has been extended into the weekend over fears that children, the elderly and people with medical conditions could be at risk.

Experts say temperatures will hit 37C (98F) in parts of the UK by tomorrow and could be even higher in some areas – the highest ever recorded at this time of year.

The all-time UK high is 38.5C (101F) set in Kent in August 2003, while the highest recorded temperature for July is 36.7 C at Heathrow on July 1, 2015.

Dr Thomas Waite, consultant in health protection at Public Health England, said: “Temperatures are likely be high in parts of England this week, which may leave older peo- ple, young children and those with long-term conditions, including heart and lung diseases, struggling to adapt to the heat. “So keep an eye on friends and family who may be at risk. “To beat the heat, try to keep out the sun from 11am to 3pm, walk in the shade if you can, apply sunscreen and wear a hat if you have to go out in the heat. Also, try to carry water with you when travelling.” “If there’s anybody you know, for example an older person living on their own, who might be at special risk, make sure they know what to do.” The heatwave is set to continue tomorrow, with some chance of rain and thunderstorms in the north west.

As forecasters predict recordbreaking temperatures, the oppressive heat has taken effect across the country.

On Wednesday, nurses warned that some hospital wards saw levels to rise above 30C, leaving patients and their relatives feeling sick, with some passing out.

Social workers, maintenance staff and community wardens are all on high alert, The Local Government Association said, to identify those who could be struggling.

Pet owners are being warned not to exercise their dogs between late morning and mid afternoon due to the risk of heatstroke and burnt paws on scorching pavements.
