‘mindless litter louts’ leave Piccadilly gardens in mess

-

THIS was the disgusting mess left in Piccadilly Gardens by ‘mindless litter louts’ during the heatwave in Manchester.

Council contractors were drafted in on Wednesday morning to clear up the area where alcohol bottles, cans and takeaway wrappers had been chucked into the flower beds.

Town hall bosses branded the behaviour ‘utterly unacceptable’ as BIFFA workers moved in and spent hours cleaning up the area.

Manchester Council are urging those enjoying the hot, sunny weather to keep the city clean and clear up after themselves. Those who don’t will face a penalty fine.

Coun Rabnawaz Akbar, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, Manchester City Council, said: “There’s absolutely no excuse for this and it’s utterly unacceptable.

“Dumping cans and food wrappers like this is not OK and shows a complete lack of respect for everyone else who is out and about trying to enjoy the city centre. It also shows no respect for our hard working contractors who have to spend time cleaning up this kind of mess when they should be working elsewhere.

“We won’t tolerate mindless litter louts in the city and want everyone to know that our enforcement officers will be keeping a close eye out in this area over the next few weeks and will issue penalty notices to anyone they see dropping litter instead of putting it in a bin or taking it home with them.

“We all want to be outside in this good weather, and we all need to do our bit to help keep the city centre litter free and looking good.“
