FIREFIGHTERS were tackling a large blaze which ripped through the moors in Derbyshire yesterday.

Crews from Ashton and Hyde are using water backpacks to battle the flames above the village of Tintwistle, near the border with Tameside.

The blaze broke out at about 9pm last night, with photos from residents showing huge plumes of smoke billowing from the woodland.

Mitch Davies tweeted at 9.45pm: “Another fire on the moors, more near Tintwistle this time. Fire crews are there! Let’s hope it gets put out soon! Sad times.”

James Goddard, @jimmy_goddard, added: “Not this again... I hope this fire is gone by tomorrow morning. Looks like it’s started in the Holybank Quarry above Tintwistle and spread over the top and back of it.”

And Mel, @MellesBellesMcrMoors, tweeted: “Moors are on fire again above Tintwistle. Awful.”

Crews from Glossop, Hyde, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Whaley Bridge and New Mills worked overnight to battle the blaze, leaving in the early hours of the morning.

Park rangers then monitored the fire overnight, a Derbyshire fire spokesman said, before firefighters returned to the scene.

Two crews from Ashton and Hyde are currently at the scene dampening down with water backpacks, a spokesman said.

He said: “The incident is still ongoing, but has since been scaled down to just two appliances with Firefighters continuing to damp down.”

Niall Burlinson sent in a photo of thick grey smoke roaring from the fire on Thursday morning.
