Big win could lead to full-time career

- BOXING By SHELDAN KEAY

BEN Sheedy is set for his first title fight tonight – and he hopes a victory can pave the way to him becoming a full-time boxer.

The Sale fighter takes on Matthew Wigglesworth for the Central Area middleweight title at the Bolton Whites Hotel, on a bill headlined by the returning David Price.

Sheedy currently has to split his schedule between boxing and his full-time job as a bricklayer – but he now has ambitions of kicking on in his career and achieving big things in the sport.

“I want to be a full-time boxer now. At the end of the day, as much as people say ‘fair play’ when they find out about my schedule, I spend time on site when I should be resting,” he said.

“I’ve got sponsors I’m very grateful for, but I still have to work and it eats into time I could dedicate to my training regime so the long-term goal is to get to a position where I’m boxing full-time.

“It’s hard to go from the early morning training session then to the building site and then back for another training session. It’s not so much the fact that it’s physically demanding as it is mentally demanding. It’s not ideal.

“Fighting for my first title is definitely a step towards that and I’m looking forward to it. This is only my third fight with MTK Global and it’s a title fight so I’m grateful.”
