Joel’s future in safe hands as he plans his next move

- By CIARAN KELLY

JOEL Pereira has revealed he will soon find out where he will be playing next season.

With David de Gea on holiday and Sergio Romero still recovering from a knee injury, the 22-year-old has played a half in each of United’s three pre-season games so far in the US – and saved three penalties in the shoot-out win against AC Milan.

Although Jose Mourinho has hailed his compatriot as the ‘best Portuguese ‘keeper of the next generation’, Pereira has found competitive game time hard to come by.

Indeed, last season, Pereira made just one appearance after coming on as a late substitute in the Carabao Cup win against Burton in September. Following previous spells at Rochdale and Belenenses, the Swizterland-born ‘keeper is keen on going out on loan again.

Mourinho is open to letting him go after signing veteran Lee Grant from Stoke earlier this summer.

M.E.N. Sport understands Pereira will sit down with his agent in Miami next week after United’s clash with Real Madrid.

“Obviously I have been here the last 18 months and the manager shows good faith and trust in me,” he told MUTV.

“He wants me to play and he thinks it’s the right thing for me and I will find out next week where I play next season. I want to prove the manager the faith he put in me is right.” Pereira signed a new four-year contract with United last summer.
