Mahrez boost for City

BLUES SAY INJURED STAR WILL RETURN TO TRAINING THIS WEEK

- By JOE BRAY

RIYAD Mahrez will return to training this week after a knock to his ankle forced him off injured during City’s final game of their US pre-season tour.

Mahrez was substituted in the 27th minute of the victory over Bayern Munich after a collision with defender Chris Richards.

He was then pictured in a protective boot and using crutches as the squad returned to Manchester Airport to begin preparations for Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Chelsea.

However, City confirmed yesterday the injury is not as bad as first feared.

The club said: “Riyad Mahrez has been given the all-clear to return to training later this week after picking up an ankle knock. A scan today has revealed no significant damage, and he could be available for selection for this weekend’s Community Shield against Chelsea.”

The news will be a relief to Pep Guardiola, who has been without many of his first-team players due to their delayed returns to training because of their World Cup exploits.

Mahrez, City’s £60m record signing had impressed in the US, and would have been certain to play against Chelsea without suffering this injury setback.

Now he has been given the all-clear to resume training, City fans will hope to see their new man in competitive action at Wembley at the weekend.
