THE fumes inhaled by a police officer at a flat came from ammonia and peroxide.

A man, 23, was arrested for drugs offences after cocaine and chemicals were found at the property on Bryony Close, Wythenshawe, on Thursday night. He was detained on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A substances.

While police searched the house, at around 8pm, an officer said he felt ill having inhaled chemical fumes.

He was rushed to hospital by paramedics as colleagues evacuated neighbouring homes as a precaution. A cordon was put up along the street. The officer was discharged from hospital a couple of hours later after getting the all-clear from medics.

Fire officers carried out tests on the chemicals, which were confirmed to be ammonia and peroxide.

They are not believed to have posed any threat to people living nearby.

The raid was carried out by GMP’s Challenger Manchester team, a specialised unit of detectives tasked with tackling organised crime across the city. Det Chief Insp Liam Boden said: “The man we arrested last night remains in custody and will be questioned by detectives today as our inquiries continue.

“I know the large emergency services presence in the area will have caused some concern amongst local residents, however I would like to stress that the scene poses no threat to them or the rest of the community.

“One of the officers involved in the operation felt unwell at the scene so he went to hospital as a precautionary measure and I’m pleased to say that he was discharged later that night and is in good health.”
