Second vote will be worse
ROD Slater may want a second referendum (“Second Brexit vote is
fair,” Viewpoints, August 4), but previous Labour Home Secretary David Blunkett has just published clear reasons why another referendum would likely increase the vote to leave and drag out proceedings even further; whilst domestic issues need urgent attention.
From his experience and realistic messages received at community meetings and advice surgeries, he repudiates Peter Mandelson’s ridiculous accusation that leavers “are nationalists who hate other countries and foreigners”. He also asserts that across the political spectrum there is deep concern for our democracy if the majority vote is ignored to keep things virtually as they are; for the benefit of the few, not the many.
Apart from disentangling thousands of intrusive rules, while recognising an existing unfair economic divide and economic fragility across the EU, vindictive belligerence shown in negotiations is stiffening resolve for the UK to break free for self determination; with details to follow accordingly.
Negative deaf ears have ignored very many well-informed economic positive justifications for leaving and Mr Blunkett calls for national unification in the spirit of the past to negotiate a departure without surrender. Bill Newham, Worsley
