A POPULAR teenager died after taking amphetamine on a night out with friends, an inquest heard.

Jack Brereton, 19 had been out with friends in Tameside where it is believed he consumed drugs in the form of a pill.

The morning after, his mother found him unresponsive at their Audenshaw home.

Emergency services went to the address on North Road but Jack was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jack was epileptic and it is believed the consumption of amphetamine triggered a seizure linked to the condition, leading to his death.

Prior to his death the shop assistant had been advised by doctors to stop taking his medication as his seizures had appeared to subside.

These facts emerged as the teenager’s inquest was formally opened at South Manchester Coroners Court yesterday morning.

Coroner Chris Morris said: “Jack was a 19-year-old who suffered with epilepsy.

“He used to be on medication but this was stopped after his seizures subsided. On May 5 this year, he went out with friends and drank a large quantity of alcohol and a pill of some kind. At 3am he arrived home and went to sleep.

“He was found by his mother the next morning. He appeared still, but was not breathing.

“Paramedics were called but life was pronounced extinct.”

The inquest heard a postmortem examination conducted by pathologist Vicki Howarth concluded that Jack had died after an epileptic seizure due to amphetamine use.

A Facebook page was set up by friends at the time of Jack’s death to pay their respects. Danielle Hough posted: “Still can’t believe you’re gone. Amazing lad, you always knew how to put a smile on everyone’s face.”

Another friend, Kayla Kelly, said: “You truly were one special lad. You were took too soon from us.”

Shania Denton added: “RIP Jack. Had so many memories together, you were a good mate to us all and we’re going miss you dearly. Gone way too soon.”

A full inquest into the circumstances of the teenager’s death will take place later in the year.
