We must get better, says Roughyeds boss

- By TOM BRAMWELL

A 60-26 victory over Hemel Stags last time out might have moved Oldham into the top four of the Betfred League 1 table, but coach Scott Naylor wants to see a significant improvement from his side when they take on Whitehaven at the Vestacare Stadium this weekend.

The Cumbrian side went down 46-0 to leaders Bradford last time out, but could move above Roughyeds with victory - and if other results go against them, Oldham could drop as low as seventh.

“It’s always pleasing to win and it was a win we needed, especially with the competition for play-off spots being so tight,” said Naylor.

“Am I pleased at the performance? Not really. It wasn’t good to see them score 28 points. That’s not what we are about.

“We needed to be a lot better defensively and we will have to improve massively on defence against Whitehaven, who are one of our main rivals for a play-off spot.

“It’s always nice to win, but we could have done things a lot better and we could have been more switched-on, especially in defence.

“We’ve plenty to work on this week, but we’ll be ready on Sunday.”

The Roughyeds boss is still waiting to discover if he will face disciplinary action after his hearing for disputing a match official’s decision was adjourned last week. Naylor and chairman Chris Hamilton travelled to the tribunal in Leeds, but the match officials involved in the incident were not present.
