A TODDLER was left screaming in pain after cutting himself on broken glass on a playground slide.

Rochelle Lonergan’s son Tristan, aged 17 months, cut his hand open when he went down the chute at Tayfield Road Park in Wythenshawe.

The mum-of-two is now urging other parents to be careful when using the play area.

Rochelle was just getting her younger son, seven-month-old Spencer, out of the pram when she turned around to see Tristan going up the slide.

“He got to the top of the climbing frame and before I could grab him, he’d gone down the slide – he’s a small baby, I follow him around everywhere”, she said.

“Tristan went down head first with his hands out, and he ended up with a cut on his hand. He was crying, so it must have hurt him. There were bits of glass on his hand.

“Afterwards, I noticed there was a lot of glass on the climbing frame area. If I had seen it before, I wouldn’t have let my children go near it.”

Rochelle, a receptionist, believes the broken bottle was left by people drinking in the park the night before Tristan was hurt. She added: “Why should they put children’s lives at risk for the sake of having a drink and smashing it? Why not put it in a bin? I thought it was dangerous.”

Councillor Luthfur Rahman, responsible for culture and leisure at Manchester Council, slammed the culprit for leaving the broken bottle, saying it was ‘completely unacceptable.’

He said: “We all have a shared responsibility for our rubbish and it’s completely unacceptable for anyone to leave broken glass in Manchester’s parks where young people will be playing - but it is beyond belief that someone would leave broken glass at the bottom of a slide where danger.

“Thankfully, this young boy was not seriously hurt, but this incident could have been much worse.

“We would urge anyone who comes across broken glass, rubbish or anything that could cause harm to young people using a park to report the issue to the city council as soon as possible.”
