Zinchenko set to leave Blues to join league new boys Wolves

- By JOE BRAY

CITY midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko will undergo a medical at Wolves this morning before finalising a permanent transfer to the Premier League newcomers.

Zinchenko has been subject of a £16m bid from the Premier League newcomers for some time, but he was thought to have turned down the chance to move to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in favour of fighting for his place at the Blues.

However, the deal for the 21-year-old is now set to go through before today’s 5pm transfer deadline.

The Ukrainian international featured in City’s pre-season tour, filling in at left-back and his favoured midfield position.

His change of heart could result from his exclusion from City’s squad for Sunday’s Community Shield win.

Zinchenko joined the Blues in 2016 from Russian Premier League side Ufa for £1.8m, and was soon loaned out to PSV Eindhoven for the season, making 17 appearances.

He returned to City last summer, appearing 14 times as the Blues won the title, mainly deputising at left-back while Benjamin Mendy and Fabian Delph were injured.

Mendy has now returned and will be a key part of City’s plans this season, while Pep Guardiola has hinted at using John Stones in defensive midfield as cover for Fernandinho rather than Zinchenko.

If the deal goes through, Zinchenko will join Leander Dendoncker in signing for Wolves today, as the Belgian defender will complete a £12m transfer from Anderlecht.
