Plenty of fun messing about on the river for good cause

-

ORGANISERS are urging new competitors to get involved in a special dinghy race on the River Mersey.

The Northenden Boat Race has raised more than £25,000 for The Christie over 12 years.

Hundreds of people take part in the event, which starts near Didsbury Golf Club and ends at Riverside Park. Many don their best fancy dress costumes – such as superheroes, clowns and even nuns – and have a laugh all while supporting a local hospital charity.

Siobhan Stallone Foran is one of the race’s organisers and has taken part every year.

“It’s a brilliant event,” she said. “We make absolute fools of ourselves but it’s such a fun day with loads going on.

“We have a community fun day afterwards at Wythenshawe Cricket Club with rides, entertainment, food and drink and other stalls.

“Hundreds of people take part and it’s really well attended but there’s room for so many more. It’s a free event – all we ask is for a £2.50 donation to enter the race.”

As well as the dinghy race, there is also a canoe race. The two events are staggered, and crowds walk along side the River Mersey supporting those taking part.

This year’s event will take place on August 26. For more information visit www.facebook.com/ northendenboatrace.
