Aces reaching crunch time in bid for place in the play-offs

- SPEEDWAY By HAYLEY BROMLEY

THE stakes couldn’t be higher for Belle Vue ahead of their visit to Leicester tonight as both teams battle to keep their hopes of reaching the Premiership play-offs alive.

Dimitri Berge makes his top-flight debut for the Rentruck Aces, while Mark Riss looks to build on an encouraging start to his Belle Vue residence.

But with six of the seven Premiership sides in action tonight, Aces team boss Mark Lemon knows nothing less than a big performance will do.

He said: “We’ve not ruled ourselves out of the top four. We’ve got a busy week coming up and plenty of opportunities to turn things around and I have confidence in the boys to deliver.

“We travel to Leicester where we’ve already put in one very good performance this season, so that gives us plenty of encouragement and motivation to go one better this time.”

Meanwhile, the Cool Running Colts take a full-strength side down to Sittingbourne where they hope to break the deadlock with the Kings and close the gap on close rivals Mildenhall.

And while the reigning champions are comfortable in the top four, club No.1 Jack Smith says his team are far from complacent, especially with congestion building up in the lower orders.

He said: “Now that other clubs are starting to catch up to us, in terms of the number of meetings they’ve raced, we need to up our game and keep the pressure on in the build-up to the play-offs.

“Kent are a more-than decent side who have really come to life in the top-four challenge and they are a force to be reckoned with at home, so we’ll need a big performance to grab some points.”

It’s a busy week for both teams as the Rentruck Aces head to Somerset on Wednesday while the Cool Running Colts welcome Kent to the National Speedway Stadium the same night.
