Crolla’s on track to help raise awareness
IT’S set to be a whirlwind few days for Anthony Crolla, with the former world champion getting married to his long-term partner Fran this weekend – but that isn’t stopping him from competing in a unique event tomorrow.
The former WBA lightweight king will head to the Manchester Regional Arena at the Etihad Campus to take part in the Manchester International Athletics event.
Crolla, alongside new Commonwealth champion Stacey Copeland, will join forces with fellow boxers to take on a rugby league team spearheaded by former Salford player Luke Ambler. The two teams will go head-to-head over 100m, long jump, shot put and the 4x100m relay.
The organisers are also planning to make a ‘Time to Change’ pledge, signifying their commitment to ending mental health stigma in sport.
Ambler is well aware of the importance of mental health, as he founded Andy’s Man Club, a support group for men experiencing suicidal thoughts, following the tragic death of his brother-in-law.
Crolla was involved in the Manchester International Athletics event last year, and he is looking forward to being part of it once again just days before his wedding. “The atmosphere at last year’s event was fantastic. So when I was offered the opportunity to come back, I jumped at the chance,” said Crolla. “Enjoying good mental health is so important and as professional boxers we all know how difficult it can be to maintain it. This is a great way to highlight the benefits of sport on maintaining good mental health and should also demonstrate that boxers are superior athletes to rugby players!” Copeland is also relishing the chance to be part of the team, and she is well aware of how vital sport can be in helping people with their lifestyle. “Any sport is fantastic for people to be involved with, whether it’s competitive sport or just as part of a physically active lifestyle,” she said. Tickets for the event are still available and can be purchased at manchesterinternationalathletics.co.uk. They are priced at £5 for adults, while entry is free for under16s.
