Fire crews tackle huge blaze at recycling plant

-

FIFTY firefighters were last night tackling a blaze which took hold of a recycling plant.

A tower of black smoke was seen for several miles across Greater Manchester during the incident on Frederick Road in Pendleton, Salford. Local residents were urged to keep their windows and doors closed.

Emergency crews from Broughton, Salford, Manchester Central, Moss Side, Atherton and Eccles were first called at 5.30pm to JWS Waste and Recycling, around 300 metres from the A6 and Salford Crescent railway station.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Several road closures remained in place last night between Broad Street and Frederick Road Junction, Frederick Road and Lower Broughton Road, Lower Broughton Road and Cromwell Road, and Cromwell Road and Lissadel Street.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said last night: “Fifty firefighters are continuing to tackle the blaze involving a large recycling plant in Frederick Road, Salford.

“Officers are working with partner agencies to make the area safe and bring the fire under control.”

As it grew dark last night, small pockets of flames could be seen inside the plant. Witnesses said the waste appeared to be piled up high, making it difficult for crews to fully extinguish the flames.

Crews were expected to remain at the scene overnight and into today.
