Fury backs trainer as Wilder waits in wings
TYSON SHOWDOWN WITH WBC CHAMP CLOSER THAN EVER
TYSON Fury insists he has no concerns about his partnership with trainer Ben Davison ahead of a potential huge fight with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder later this year.
The Manchester boxer returns to action on Saturday when he takes on former world title challenger Francesco Pianeta at Windsor Park in Belfast.
A victory there looks like it will set up a showdown with Wilder in Las Vegas in November, and the American is scheduled to be in Northern Ireland for Fury’s fight this weekend.
It would be the second time Fury has challenged for a world title, following his victory over Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015.
The 30-year-old had his uncle Peter Fury as his trainer for that bout, but the two have since parted ways and Tyson is now coached by young trainer Davison.
Some onlookers have raised concerns about Davison, believing he may not be experienced enough to lead Fury into a huge fight with Wilder, but the Manchester boxer is confident he has the right man to now guide his career.
“It’s a good thing that we get on so well because communication between boxer and trainer is a key element of success. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s a ‘bromance,’ but Ben and I do get on like a house on fire,” said Fury.
“If Ben couldn’t get himself across to me and I couldn’t understand what he was saying, it’d be pointless working together.
“Ben told me I didn’t focus enough on the last fight. I couldn’t have trained any harder or eaten any better. I gave him everything I had but maybe I could’ve focused more.”
The fight with Pianeta on Saturday will be Fury’s second comeback fight since making his return, following on from his victory over Sefer Seferi in June. There was criticism for that fight due to the ability level Seferi was operating at, but Tyson’s father John Fury is adamant it was a solid test.
“Seferi wasn’t the greatest opponent, but look at his record. It shows how good Tyson is – the minute he gets serious, you’re in trouble,” said John Fury.
“They can all talk, watching him from home or giving it the big one with four or five pints down them, but it’s different when you’re in the ring and up close and personal with him. “He can switch it on. He’s got a Ferrari gear box. You also don’t know what you’re going to get with him and that’s what makes him box office and sellable.” Fury’s fight with Pianeta is on the same bill as Carl Frampton’s bout with Luke Jackson.
