Bury’s heartbreak after losing in 22-penalty drama

BURY were cruely denied a giantkilli­ng victory in the Carabao Cup after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser and then losing on penalties at Championsh­ip side Nottingham Forest.

The Shakers led after just two minutes when Eoghan O’Connell scored.

Their hopes of winning were then given a boost when Forest goalkeeper Jordan Smith was sent off, with Hillal Soudani sacrificed in place of substitute keeper Luke Steele.

It looked like the League Two Shakers would hold on, but in the third minute of stoppage time Forest equalised through Matty Cash to send the game to a penalties.

There were 22 spot-kicks taken, and Bury suffered heartbreak when O’Connell missed the decisive shot.

ROCHDALE are through to the next round after picking up a comfortabl­e victory at League Two side Grimsby Town.

Oliver Rathborn made the breakthrou­gh for the visitors when he opened the scoring on 39 minutes, and he put the result beyond doubt when he doubled the lead with just over 10 minutes to go.

OLDHAM ATHLETIC were knocked out after they suffered defeat at home to Championsh­ip side Derby County.

Goals from Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount in each half earned Frank Lampard’s side the victory at Boundary Park.

There was also a presentati­on before the game as former Oldham boss Joe Royle was present for the unveiling of the north stand, which has been named in his honour.

MACCLESFIE­LD TOWN produced the giantkilli­ng of the night after knocking out League One side Bradford City.

Fiacre Kelleher made the breakthrou­gh for the Silkmen on the hour mark, but Bradford levelled things moments later when Luca Colville got the equaliser.

The game went to penalties, with Tyrone Marsh netting the decisive spot-kick that helped Macc win the shootout 4-2.

WIGAN ATHLETIC were knocked out after losing 3-1 at Rotherham United.

Jamie Proctor got the opening goal for Rotherham on 37 minutes, and Semi Ajayi extended it before half-time. Proctor got his second of the game just after the hour mark. James Vaughan netted the consolatio­n.

BOLTON WANDERERS are also out after a 2-1 defeat at Championsh­ip rivals Leeds.

Goals from Patrick Bamford and Samu Saiz earned Leeds the win at Elland Road, despite a Bolton goal through Erhun Oztumer.
