Stoney’s eyes already on title

- By DAN O’TOOLE

CASEY Stoney says she wants to win the league with United Women in her first season as manager of the newly-formed side.

The Reds got off to the perfect start in their curtain-raiser against Liverpool, with an 82nd-minute winner securing all three points against top-tier opposition in the Continental Tyres League Cup.

And Stoney wants to win the Women’s Super League 2 for the right to play at the highest level next season.

“I want the girls to enjoy winning. We do want to win the league, of course we do. These players want to be in the top league,” the United manager said.

“These are the games we want, [to play] teams who are above us. It allows us to see where we’re at individually and collectively.”

United belied their status as a second division side with an impressive performance against Liverpool, with a 3-5-2 formation seeing the Reds forge the best of the chances at Prenton Park.

But Stoney insists that the best is yet to come from her young side.

“I’m really pleased with the three points but we can play better,” she said. “We lost a grip of the midfield a little bit at times so we made changes. That’s not a criticism, we just needed more legs.

“These girls have put an absolute shift in over the six weeks we’ve been together. There’s been lots of media attention.”
