It’s time to nominate a sport hero
NOMINATIONS are now open for the Manchester Sport Awards, which celebrate local sporting heroes.
Members of the community are urged to vote in categories including the M.E.N.’s People’s Champion, Coach of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year and Changing Lifestyle Recognition Award.
Stars including former Olympic sprinter Katharine Merry will be attending the glitzy event, to be held at the Hilton on Deansgate in October.
The Premier League trophy and the Carabao Cup, both won by City, will be paraded through the venue as part of the opening ceremony.
The Manchester Sport Awards, which will be held on Saturday, October 27, is now in its tenth year.
The aim of the event is to shine a light on community champions who promote sport, as well as sportsmen and women who have excelled in their chosen field.
Coun Luthfur Rahman, responsible for culture and leisure at Manchester council, said: “For a decade the Manchester Sports Awards have picked out those incredible people who consistently go above and beyond for sports across the city. “These are the people who work tirelessly for local teams and clubs without need for recognition, but this is our chance to show them how much their effort is appreciated. “Let us know about that football coach or running partner, or that incredible volunteer that makes Manchester one of the best places in the UK to play sports. “If you think they deserve to be known, give them a nomination and tell us why.” Nicola Stockdale, who won Young Volunteer of the Year in 2016, said: “Winning a Manchester Sports Award two years ago was a nice surprise and the evening itself was an amazing occasion. I volunteer regularly at Debdale Outdoor Centre alongside my work, and am vice chairperson of the Junior Outdoor Activity Club where I am able to introduce more new people to the sport of sailing. Nominating someone for a Manchester Sports Award is a great way to say thank you to people who are passionate about sport in Manchester.” Nominations close on Monday, September 3.
