Pundits say Silva deserves Player of the Year award

- By RICH FAY @ManCityMEN

UNITED legend Gary Neville and Liverpool great Jamie Carragher have both tipped David Silva to win the PFA Player of the Year award.

The Spaniard has started the new Premier League season in scintillating form and orchestrated City’s 6-1 demolition of Huddersfield over the weekend.

Silva scored his first free-kick for City on an emotional day for the midfielder after he has walked out on the pitch with baby Mateo.

The 32-year-old missed periods of last season’s record-breaking title win in order to travel back to Spain and spend valuable time with his son, who was born extremely prematurely.

Despite the personal trauma Silva never let his situation affect his performances, and both Sky Sports pundits believe he deserves to win the award for his ‘unique quality’.

“Listen, we haven’t got a clue! I’d love to see him win it. I think that’s what it is based on,” Carragher said.

“He was brilliant yesterday again, and he is one of the greats of the Premier League era.

“I think he will go down as City’s greatest ever player when he finally hangs up his boots.

“But, I think in picking Silva he is one of the best players in the Premier League, but I’m picking him because I’d love to see him.

“I think City will win the league and I think there is a good chance that player may come from City. I know (Mohamed) Salah won it last year, but if there was anyone from City I’d want it to be him.”

Neville agreed with his colleague, and despite his own connections with the red half of Manchester, the United legend praised Silva’s incredible levels of professionalism.

“I think David Silva is a player who is quite unique, who neutralises ever single football fan and professional football player from every other club in the country,” Neville said.

“Everybody universally just loves him and appreciates him. That is a unique quality, particularly when you think of the level of rivalry in football.

“He is a brilliant, brilliant, player, an amazing player. I think it comes to one of those times where everyone likes him, his level of performance is high.

“For me David Silva is a brilliant example of what a professional footballer should be.”
