School pays tribute to arena bomb girl
YESTERDAY should have been the day Megan Hurley collected her GCSE results – but she was robbed of that chance after being killed in the Manchester Arena attack last year.
Students and staff at Megan’s high school made sure their classmate wasn’t forgotten as they reunited for an emotional GCSE results day.
The principal of Halewood Academy called the school’s best ever results a ‘fantastic tribute’ to the 15-year-old, who was one of 22 people killed in the atrocity.
Gary Evans, principal of the Liverpool school, said the 170-strong year 11 group had overcome huge challenges to achieve the results.
Mr Evans said: “When they were in Year 10 they lost Megan in the Manchester bombing and, considering the trauma they have gone through, to get the best results the school has ever had is a fantastic tribute to Megan, as much as to the hard work of the staff and students.”
He also praised students for playing an integral role in helping the staff through the incredibly difficult period following Megan’s death.
Megan had been at the Ariana Grande concert with her brother Bradley when they were both caught in the blast on May 22. Bradley was seriously injured, suffering two broken legs, burn injuries and a perforated ear drum.
He spent four weeks in hospital, two of which were on the high dependency unit.
Megan’s parents Mike and Joanne paid tribute to their daughter last year as a ‘kind-hearted, loving, caring and beautiful young lady’.
