A WOMAN was fighting for her life in hospital after being hit by a van.
Police were called to the collision on Halifax Road, Littleborough, Rochdale, at around 9.45am yesterday.
The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was crossing at the junction of Union Road when she was struck by the white Vauxhall Combo Van.
She suffered multiple, life-threatening injuries and was taken to Salford Royal.
A man, 23, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving under the influence of drugs and driving without a licence. The driver remained in police custody.
Pc John Harrison-Gough, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This woman is currently fighting for her life in hospital after suffering major trauma as a result of this collision and we are doing everything we can to find out exactly what happened.
“We have one man in custody but I would implore any pedestrians or drivers who saw anything to please get in touch – we need as much information as possible.
“Dashcam footage can also be crucial for these types of investigations and I’d urge drivers to check their cameras to see if they have any videos which could help us.”
An air ambulance was initially sent to the scene, but the woman was eventually taken to hospital in a land ambulance.
A North West Ambulance Spokeswoman said: “It does look quite serious, she has got quite a serious head injury. The hospital is on standby.”
