Pep always wanted Muric return

- By STUART BRENNAN

PEP Guardiola said that Aro Muric was always their preferred option after Claudio Bravo’s injury.

The Blues have been linked with a host of goalkeepers since the Chile international ruptured an Achilles tendon in training earlier this week.

The latest was former Brazil international Diego Cavalieri, the 35-year-old ex-Liverpool and Crystal Palace reserve.

But Guardiola said he never had a discussion with football director Txiki Begiristain about Cavalieri, or any other keeper.

The Blues have recalled Montenegro under-21 international Muric from his season’s loan after just one appearance for the Dutch side.

It was not an instant decision because the Blues had a delicate negotiation with Breda, who had made Muric their number one.

“From the beginning it was Aro, Aro,” said Guardiola.

“That was the option. We decided to have Daniel Grimshaw as third choice and now there will be all three for us.”

Muric was a familiar figure last season, included in most matchday squads as emergency back-up to Ederson and Bravo, but has not appeared on the bench for the first team.

But Guardiola expressed his faith in the 19-year-old: “Aro has amazing potential as a goalkeeper, he’s huge and so young but last season he played in the second team without real competition.”
