‘Uplifting, moving’ day for sixth form pioneers

- By CHARLOTTE DOBSON

A HIGH school welcomed its first ever set of A-level results.

St Ambrose Barlow in Swinton took on its first full cohort of sixth form students in 2016, marking new territory for the school.

Headteacher Ben Davies said the sixth form’s first A-level and BTEC results day had been a success.

“When we started regenerating the sixth form in 2015 it was at a time when other centres were closing their post-16 provision,” said Mr Davies.

“Today’s results are reason to celebrate for the individual students, their families, and for the staff who have supported them over the last two years, and the local community.

“We are very proud of our first, full sixth form year group.

“They have not only achieved well but have made a huge contribution to developing the sixth form. It has been uplifting and moving to see pupils walking out of here today knowing that have a passport to the next stage in their lives.

“We were always driven by the idea that our sixth form would be a beacon of ambition in Salford for all and it is important to recognise the considerable support of other high schools and of the local authority in helping to realise this aspiration.”

In 2015 there were only 23 students in the sixth form but it is now full to capacity.

Two sets of twins were among those celebrating exam success.

Sara and Laura Janicka, who have studied at St Ambrose since Year 8, were jumping for joy at their double achievement.

Sara was school’s highest performing student with three A* grades and one B, securing her a place at Salford University to study graphic design. Her sister, Laura, will go on to study architecture.

Twins Nick and Neil Connor were among the 75 students opening their results, and have secured degree apprenticeships in engineering.
