MORE than 300 students from Hopwood Hall College are looking forward to university after picking up their exam results. Among them is Emily Berry, 18, who achieved a triple distinction in her Level 3 Extended Diploma in creative media production and has deferred a fashion communication degree at Northumbria University for a year while she builds up her experience. Summira Khan, who earned a triple distinction in her Level 3 Extended Diploma in sports science, made the switch from A-levels to vocational studies after completing her AS-levels. She said: “Coming from a different background than is typical, I received a lot of weird looks studying a sports course. But it’s the career path I wanted to do so I just cracked on and applied myself. “Now I am focused on completing my sports rehabilitation degree at Salford University and working on a career in physical rehabilitation.” Heather Wightman scored a triple distinction* and also countered stereotypes while she studied a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in mechanical engineering. She is now going to study architecture at Manchester University. Oliver Lee will be progressing to Hopwood Hall College’s higher education courses after gaining a triple distinction in general sports Level 3 Extended Diploma.

And Storm Pemberton earned a triple distinction* in her animal management Level 3 Extended Diploma and will be studying wildlife conservation and zoo biology at Salford University.

TEACHERS at Cardinal Langley Sixth Form were full of praise for their A-level pupils.

This year 51 per cent of all A-level grades were A*-B and with an average grade of a B.

Andy Bridson, headteacher at Cardinal Langley, said: “The quality of work our students produce continues to amaze us and we are proud of these fantastic results.

“Many students have exceeded their expectations and more students than ever have been successful in their university and apprenticeship applications.

“Staff have worked tirelessly to prepare students for the new, reformed qualifications and we are proud of our 98pc pass rate, despite the more demanding content of the courses.” Individual successes included Rebecca Robinson who achieved A*, A* and A, and is going to the University of Manchester to study philosophy, politics and economics.

Aaron Boland got two As and a B, securing him a place at University of Leeds to study dentistry.
