ANY COLOUR AS LONG AS IT’S...

- By DEBORA ARU

IF it is true you can tell a lot about someone by their car, then British motorists seem a pretty unadventurous lot. New data released by the Department for Transport and the DVLA shows that, at the end of 2017, more than one in five cars on our roads was silver.

In all, Britain has 6.5 million silver cars registered for use.

That’s marginally more than the 6.4 million black cars. They made up one in 5.0 of all cars on our roads.

One in every 5.6 cars was blue and one in every 7.4 was grey.

White cars were also popular, making up one in every 8.8 seen on our roads.

It is a fairly predictable top five - but there were more obscure colours on the list.

At the end of last year, somewhere in Britain there were 20,873 pink cars and 7,207 multicoloured cars. We seem fairly set in our ways when it comes to car brands, too. Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows the Ford Fiesta remains comfortably the most popular car.

Some 62,637 have been sold in 2018 so far.

The Volkswagen Golf is in second, with 45,512 sales, followed by the Nissan Qashqai (33,536), Ford Focus (32,899), and Vauxhall Corsa (31,673).

While the British motorist seems to know what they like, the latest data shows we are actually putting fewer new cars on the road than before. There were 2.5 million new car registrations in 2017 - a fall from 2.7 million the previous year. And the SMMT estimates that the number of new cars is set to fall again next year.
