School aims to raise £30,000 to help hospital

-

SCHOOL pupils are raising funds to buy a piece of life-saving equipment for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

The Manchester Grammar School is aiming for £30,000 to purchase a bronchoscopy camera.

Pupils decided to help the hospital as a thank you for the first-class treatment MGS boys admitted to the hospital have received in recent years.

Over the last 12 months, the school has held a series of fundraising events, which will culminate with a charity dinner, to be held at MGS, on Saturday, September 29.

The specialised bronchoscopy camera is inserted into a patient’s airway to check the lungs and the airway for any signs of damage.

The hospital currently undertakes around 160 of these procedures every year, but as each camera has to be thoroughly cleaned between procedures, there are not enough cameras to meet the demands on the department.

By purchasing another camera for the hospital, it would allow the clinic to not only reduce waiting times, but it could also be used on smaller patients, including babies, and potentially save their lives. Vivienne Horsfield, assistant head at The Manchester Grammar School, said: “Manchester is very fortunate to have a worldclass hospital for children and young people on its doorstep and we want to support their incredible work. “Our boys are keen to give something back to the MGS assistant head Vivienne Horsfield hospital and are determined to raise the money to buy this vital piece of equipment.

“We know the demand on this hospital is considerable and many of our boys have been treated there.

“We want to play our part as a Manchester school to help RMCH.

“The charity dinner will be a fantastic night in support of such a worthy cause, so if anyone would like to help us reach our fundraising target, please buy a ticket and come along, or if anyone would like to donate an item for the auction this would be gratefully received.”

A drinks reception will begin at 7pm, and during the fundraiser there will also be an auction which includes a Real Madrid shirt signed by football superstar Zinedine Zidane.
