Labour in pledge to boost rail

-

JEREMY Corbyn has pledged to improve the state of rail transport in the North as passengers continue to face overcrowding, delays and cancellations.

The Labour leader branded the on-going chaos of northern services as ‘Tory rail mayhem,’ ahead of the party’s National Rail Campaign launch today.

As the party announced a commitment of £10bn to Crossrail for the North, Mr Corbyn planned to travel the proposed route today, speaking with passengers and discussing their experiences.

He will track the proposed line, travelling from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester then on to Leeds and Hull.

It comes after the think tank IPPR North found that underfunding has seen the North of England miss out on £63bn in transport investment during the last decade.

The figures show that city regions, such as Greater Manchester, are losing out to London, which receives £419 more investment per head every year.

Tomorrow, Northern Rail’s latest timetable is set to be introduced. Its May timetable quickly came under fire, as thousands of commuters across the region were hit with disruptions, after 170 services a day were slashed.

Passengers have continued to face travel misery with major weekend disruption, after Northern cancelled scores of services over summer holidays.
