THESE are the books that are most likely to have been left behind by travellers at a popular hotel chain.

Travelodge has revealed its annual ‘Books Left Behind Index’ and half of the top 20 are paperbacks that have become topical box office hit movies and critically acclaimed TV series.

The top five books were The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Attwood, The Couple Next Door by Sharri Lapena, Bad Dad by David Walliams, Origin by Dan Brown and The Secret by Rhonda Bryne

Meanwhile, books which have been made into films, including The Girl on The Train, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, IT and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, all featured.

Other books which made the list are ones which have been turned into television shows, including Sharp Objects, Big Little Lies and Thirteen Reasons Why.

And for the first time ever, two colouring books have made the top 20, including The Secret Garden: An inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book and Harry Potter Colouring Book.

J.K Rowling and comedian turned novelist, David Walliams are the only two authors to have two books in the top 20.

UK political opinion on Brexit has been an area of curiosity for some, with Tim Shipman’s All Out War: The Full Story of How Brexit Sank Britain’s Political Class claiming 16th position on the list, while Donald Trump’s ‘The Art of the Deal’ has been a must read – taking 20th position on the list.

During the last 12 months, more than 70,000 books have been left behind in Travelodge’s 42,000 rooms across the country.

The most common reasons are that they have been finished, lost in the bed sheets, or travellers have got bored of them and left them behind for someone else to read.

Shakila Ahmad, Travelodge spokesperson said: “Interestingly our Travelodge Books Left Behind Index has revealed that classic and popular books that have been turned into a award winning TV series or a box office movie have instigated an appetite for Britons to delve back into paperbacks.

“Across our 550 UK Travelodge hotels, business and leisure customers report that a good book offers the ultimate escape whilst travelling.”
