Treble-winning great sees positive changes at United

-

JOSE Mourinho needs to be given time, but he will deliver a Premier League trophy at United according to club great Peter Schmeichel.

There’s been rising speculation about the Portuguese’s United future having watched his side lose two of the opening three games of the new Premier League season – prior to yesterday’s morale-boosting win at Burnley.

Having finished 19 points behind champions City last season Mourinho will have been hoping to cut that gap in order to land his first league title at Old Trafford.

While some have called for Mourinho to be axed after United’s poor start to the season, Schmeichel – who won the treble during his time at the club – still has faith he can deliver a Premier League title.

“If we give him time and patience, and the players, we can actually focus on what’s happening, which is progression.

“He is doing good things. Yes, we strive for more but he is doing positive things,” he told Sky Sports.

“When we give him time and patience and we understand that this is a period where we have to develop. We want to be at a point where we can say now we will win the Premier League, and I think we will get there.”

Schmeichel, who spent eight years at Old Trafford, believes Mourinho still requires patience from the fans.

He’s been at great clubs,” he said. “Real Madrid, Inter Milan. He won the Champions League with Porto.

“Three Premier League titles with Chelsea.

“He’s done so many great things in football.

“But Manchester United is a different level to anything.

“The scrutiny, the traditions and the history that we have.

“This is in the equation every day. Every single day, we respect our history. We have very proud traditions,” the former goalkeeper added. “We finished runners-up last season from fifth the campaign before. We’re straight into the Champions League this year, we won the Europa League and we’ve been in two FA Cup finals.

“This is great. Yes, we strive for more, but these are very positive things.”
