Supporting Brexit does not put me on the right VIEWPOINTS

THE letter by Dr Gavin Lewis (Time will tell if MP was right on Brexit,

Viewpoints, September 4) seems to be under the impression that Labour Party members who are opposed to the EU come from the right of the party.

If this is the case he must classify Tony Benn, Barbara Castle, Jack Jones and Jeremy Corbyn as right wingers as they and many other Labour members and supporters oppose the EU on democratic grounds.

As Jeremy Corybn put it in the House of Commons: “The Treaties of the European Union take away from national parliaments the power to set economic policy and hands it over to an unelected set of bankers.”

Not a view that the right would endorse. Graham Stringer MP

Stop toeing the party line

I AM really interested in politics but the resignation of Labour MP Frank Field epitomises my reason why I would never ally myself to one political party in particular.

The drawback of being a politician is that they have to adhere to the majority view of the party.

Many times as individuals they will disagree with certain views but they will never speak up about it for fear of it affecting their careers.

The result is often they speak with great conviction about things they do not believe in. They become experts at circumventing their true beliefs to the public.

Of course many people will say this is ‘loyalty to the party’ but I call it hypocrisy. If we really want to make a difference in the world we have got to speak up about our true beliefs. The world of politics sadly relies on compromise.

Support the party always even if you disagree with it.

Frank Field will now have made many enemies in the Labour Party. However there will be many politicians – from both Labour and the Tories – privately thinking: “I wish I had his courage.” Harry Singleton, Ashton-under-Lyne

Call this progress?

I OFTEN wonder if in my long existence, I have seen ‘progress.’

The other day I was on a bus and at each stop the young driver had to leave his seat to force open the doors to let passengers on and off.

I remember when I was young, buses without doors – they could be draughty in the cold weather but without the problem of nonoperational doors. M Smith, Middleton

Give wheel another spin

AFTER just catching a glimpse on Granada Reports, I noticed Liverpool has a big wheel, as does London. Why can’t we get one back to Manchester. It is such a beautiful city and a wheel would be fabulous in Piccadilly. Julia Christopher, Wigan

An event to be proud of...

LAST Saturday saw the very first Didsbury Pride, held in the gardens of Home Community Café and St James & Emmanuel Church.

I would like to say a massive congratulations to Michael Pollard [aka Polly] for having the vision and commitment of putting this event together after a homophobic hate crime was witnessed in Didsbury earlier in the year.

The event was very family focused and brought people together, not just from south Manchester but others from across Greater Manchester and beyond after watching live streaming of events taking place on social media.

In all, over the period of the afternoon it was estimated more than 2,000 people attended. All those who did attend commented on how well the event was organised, how it catered for everybody and everybody felt inclusive.

Thanks Polly and the team of volunteers who you managed to bring together for putting on such a wonderful event.

Here is to Didsbury Pride 2019. Carl Austin-Behan, Didsbury
