Blues heroes take to the pitch once more
FORMER CITY STARS IN CHARITY MATCH TO RAISE CASH FOR LOCAL JUNIOR CLUB
THEIR talents graced Maine Road and Wembley.
One scored one of the most memorable goals ever seen at the national stadium.
But a team of City legends will turnout at a tiny backwater of football tomorrow.
They will take on 11 coaches and parents from West End AFC in Denton to help the club raise money for an all-weather pitch for its junior sides.
Among the Blues’ elder statesmen will be Paul Dickov, whose 94th-minute equaliser against Gillingham – which won the 1999 play-off final – was the start of City’s climb back to the big time.
The job of attempting to mark Dickov will fall to West End coach, Scott Walker.
But there will be a stellar line-up of City legends including Uwe Rosler, Paul Lake, Colin Hendry, Asa Hartford, Michael Brown and Jim and Jeff Whitley. West End offers football coaching for children of all age groups, backgrounds and gender from the local community. Ranging from a soccer school for Under-6s to an Under-15s team, they ‘encourage sportsmanship and good behaviour while developing football skills and techniques.’ Scott said: “We have estimates of between £250,000 and £500,000 for a 4G all-weather pitch and we have to raise half before we can apply for grants. “We plan to hold other fundraising events, especially in 2020 which will be the 50th anniversary of the club. “We have about 120 kids playing in our teams but we want to regenerate the club, and catch up facility-wise with other local clubs. “I am 33 years-old, and an unfit and overweight central defender, I don’t think I will be able to cope with my Scott Walker, West End coach heroes, Paul Dickov, and Uwe Rosler, but it will be a memorable day.”
The charity match will kick-off at 2pm tomorrow and is being held at Abbey Hey Football Goredale Avenue.
Tickets are available on the gate and cost £1.50 each or £5 for a family of four. Club in
