SERGIO Aguero and Benjamin Mendy both face late fitness tests on ankle injuries ahead of City’s Champions League opener against Lyon. Left-back Mendy missed Saturday’s win over Fulham with an ankle problem and Aguero went off with a similar injury at the weekend.

Both will be assessed when the players train this afternoon, says City assistant Mikel Arteta, who took today’s press conference, with Pep Guardiola suspended from the touchline tomorrow night.

“We will have the training session now and see how they react in the next 24 hours - and then make a decision.” The Blues kick off their Champions League campaign against Lyon tonight, when Guardiola will be watching from the stand as he serves a one-match Uefa ban. Aguero looked to be in discomfort as he left the field after 54 minutes of City’s 3-0 win over Fulham on Saturday. He was replaced by Gabriel Jesus, shortly after setting up Raheem Sterling for the third goal, and was grimacing after landing awkwardly. Guardiola confirmed then that he had a problem with his ankle but was not sure whether he would be fit for the Blues’ opening group game. With two games a week until Christmas, Guardiola is keen to avoid any risks, especially with Kevin De Bruyne still expected to be out for another six to eight weeks. City are favourites to win the Champions League after a favourable draw, being grouped with Lyon, Hoffenheim and Shakhtar Donetsk.
