A SUPERMARKET worker has landed his dream job building Lego.

James Windle, from Salford, has ditched his role stacking shelves at Tesco for a life creating Lego masterpieces at the Trafford Centre attraction.

And the self-confessed Lego obsessive beat thousands of applicants to land the dream job as one of only 24 master model builders in the world.

The application process saw James compete among scores of other enthusiasts during a live build-off event.

The 34-year-old impressed judges, some of whom were six to 10-years-old, with his recreation of Manchester’s Pride stage.

He was told the good news that he’d got the job with a surprise visit from a lifesized Lego character.

“I still can’t believe I’m actually a master model builder – it really is a dream come true,” James said. “I’ve been obsessed with Lego since I was little and have been creating weird and wonderful builds since before I can remember, so when I saw the role advertised, I knew I had to apply. I even have a Lego mini figure tattooed on my arm. “I can’t wait to inspire our next generation of master model builders, and teach them that they can do anything they put their minds to.” In his new role, James will be tasked with constructing models around Legoland, including one made of 1.5m bricks. He’ll also be curating exhibitions and will mentor children while they build their own models. Jenn McDonough, general manager at Merlin Entertainments, said: “We had thousands of applicants apply for the role – as you can imagine, it’s incredibly sought-after. “We chose James because he’s absolutely perfect for the job – he’s incredibly creative, talented, outgoing and patient, and the kids love him, of course! We’re delighted to welcome James into the Merlin family, and I can’t wait to see him inspire families for years to come.”
