PAUL Walker was facing a tough future after being told he was about to be made redundant.

The 56-year-old grandad, whose toothache was giving him grief, decided to have a flutter and put on an accumulator at the bookies.

That failed when he bet on his beloved Manchester United to lose to Watford. The Reds won.

Before leaving the Betfred shop, Paul, who had a spare quid in his pocket, bought an Irish Lotto ticket.

“I’d had some really bad luck and thought I could have done with a miracle,” Paul said.

He put the ticket in his shirt pocket and forgot about it for four days.

Staff at the shop in Newton, Hyde, were later told one of their customers had won a top prize. They started a search for the lucky punter, who they remembered had black hair and wore glasses.

Paul’s pals heard about the search, but it still didn’t occur to him to check his numbers.

When he finally did, he realised he had won £150,000 on the lucky dip.

It was just the bit of luck Paul needed – and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Paul, from Dukinfield, is set to lose his job at a chemical firm in January. He faced a grim Christmas and a tricky new year.

Now he and his wife Susan are looking forward to a luxury holiday in Mexico. They’re also planning a Mediterranean cruise – and are intending to buy a new car. Paul said: “I just couldn’t believe it. “I had toothache, but couldn’t get emergency dental appointment. So I went to Betfred with the slip that was still in my shirt pocket.

“I could tell straight away from the expression of the young girl behind the counter that I was the winner they had been looking for.

Paul’s wife Susan, 59, said: “Our family is going to have our best ever Christmas.

“When he came in, he was in a state of shock. He had no colour in his face. I thought it was his toothache.

“Then he told me he’d won £150,000 and he couldn’t stop hugging me.”

Betfred boss Fred Done said: “It is perfect timing for Paul to beat the odds and win so much.”
