CITY ‘I have dreamt of this, growing up a City supporter’

- By DAN O’TOOLE

PHIL Foden says his first senior goal for City is a dream come true.

The 18-year-old was the stand-out performer in the Blues’ 3-0 Carabao Cup win against Oxford, with his maiden City strike superbly-taken late on at the Kassam Stadium.

Foden provided the key pass for Gabriel Jesus’ opener, before playing a wonderfully-weighted pass for Riyad Mahrez’s third goal in two City games.

He got his name on the scoresheet with 94 minutes on the clock with a driven effort into the bottom corner, and the academy product admits he could not be happier.

“It’s hard to put into words - it hasn’t fully sunk in,” he said.

“I’ve dreamed of this moment, growing up as a City supporter.

“My first goal is special to me and I’m happy to have helped the team to get the win.

“Mostly, when I was dreaming (about scoring for City), it was in the Premier League, but in any competition, it’s special to get your first goal.”

Foden wheeled off in celebration after wrapping up victory for his side, and says he’ll never forget his landmark day. He added: “I’m happy to get it. “I couldn’t contain myself - I ran off, mad!”. “It’s a moment I’ll never forget.” The 18-year-old, who was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2017, says he is learning from the best playing at the Premier League champions.

“I enjoy assisting as well as scoring. It’s good to have both in your game,” he explained.

“I’m learning every day from the likes of David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne.

“I need to keep learning and enjoying my football, then we’ll see where I go from there.”

Foden has been restricted to cameo appearances off the bench so far this season, with last night’s Carabao Cup tie his first start this campaign.

And the Stockport-born midfielder said he was glad to start for Pep Guardiola’s side.

“It was good to get some minutes,” he said.

“I would have liked my goal to have come much earlier (in my senior career) but it’s come now and it’s a great feeling. “Hopefully, it’s the first of many!” CITY’S Under-21s beat Crewe Alexandra 4-1 in the Checkatrade Trophy last night. Goals from Tom Dele-Bashiru, Lorenzo Gonzalez, Henri Ogunby and a Taylor Richards penalty gave the Blues victory.
