Four players forced to sit out training

- By SAMUEL LUCKHURST

UNITED quartet Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo sat out their open training session yesterday morning.

The Reds squad were put through their paces in front of the cameras and assembled press at their Carrington training complex ahead of the Valencia Champions League fixture at Old Trafford tonight.

Lingard did not travel to London for the 3-1 defeat at West Ham, where Herrera was an unused substitute, while Young captained United and played the entire 90 minutes.

Rojo, 28, suffered an unspecified injury in the Under-23s’ draw with Reading last month and has made just five club appearances this year.

“Apart from Marcos Rojo, now we have Ander Herrera, Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard out,” Mourinho said.

“I prefer the doctor to speak, but they are not in [the right] conditions.”

If Young is unable to feature against Valencia, then Mourinho could recall Diogo Dalot ahead of club captain Antonio Valencia, who was dropped from the squad against West Ham.

Dalot made his debut in the group opener against Young Boys and completed another 90 minutes against Derby in the Carabao Cup last week.

Phil Jones, who was also omitted from the West Ham squad, trained yesterday morning and is in contention to return after his decisive penalty miss in the Derby defeat.

Although he isn’t playing, Young says the Reds can’t dwell on Saturday’s defeat to West Ham.

“You’ve got to put it behind you quickly and when you have these types of results you want a game as quickly as possible,” he said.

“We’ve got that, so we’ve got to dust ourselves off quickly and get rid of the disappointment.”
