Police investigation begins after body is found in river
DETECTIVES are investigating after the body of a man was found in the River Irwell.
Police were called at 1.45pm yesterday after the sighting in Salford, in water by Cromwell Bridge in Higher Broughton.
When officers arrived they confirmed it was the body of a man.
Police and firefighters were working at the scene yesterday.
An investigation will now begin to try and find out who the man is, and how he came to be there.
There was a heavy emergency services presence at Littleton Road on the bridge over the river, but the incident did not cause any road closures.
Firefighters worked with police to recover the body from the water.
Paths leading to the side of the of the river were shut off as investigations began.
In a statement released yesterday afternoon, GMP said: “Officers are currently attending reports of a body in the River Irwell in Salford.
“Shortly before 1.45pm police received a report of a suspected body in the water by Cromwell Bridge in Higher Broughton.
“Officers and the fire service attended and have confirmed it is unfortunately the body of a man.
“There are no further details at this time but an investigation is being launched to establish who the man is and how his body came to be there.
“We would ask people to try and avoid the area while we work at the scene.”
