City bus survives drive into Anfield

- By LIAM CORLESS

THERE was no repeat of April’s unsavoury scenes as the City team bus pulled in at Anfield without incident yesterday afternoon.

Much of the talk in the build-up to the crunch Premier League fixture on Merseyside had been about the attack by Liverpool fans on City’s team bus prior to the Champions League match between the two teams six months ago.

On that occasion a window on the City coach was smashed by yobs who threw bottles and cans at the vehicle.

In Pep Guardiola’s press conference on Friday he was asked what he made of a social media discussion between City’s fans, in which they suggested going to Anfield early to protect the team bus themselves.

“I think the best way to protect the bus is the Liverpool fans being like the Liverpool fans they are,” Guardiola responded. “That is the best way. “The best way is when the people arrive to the stadium, going to see a football game and enjoying both sides. We should not need the police. “Why should they be there? “Why do our fans have to protect our bus?

“Are you kidding me. I would like the police to be at home at 4.30 with their families and drinking a beer, and loving the show.

“That is what they should do, that depends on the Liverpool people, not Manchester City.”

Thankfully, City’s arrival at Anfield was low key and the football took centre stage.
