A NEIGHBOUR spoke of the moment she heard an eyewitness screaming as a woman was crushed by a van on her own driveway.

The woman, who was in her 60s, died from her injuries after becoming trapped between the grey Mercedes Panel Van and her gatepost yesterday afternoon.

Buttermere Road, a quiet residential street in Ashton-under-Lyne, was cordoned off for several hours following the horrific incident.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, was in her home when she heard a loud noise outside.

She said: “I was inside and I suddenly saw police, ambulances, sirens and flashing lights everywhere.

“Officers started taping up the road. There was a woman screaming saying ‘who did this?.’ She might have been a relation.

“There were loads of police and ambulances. I don’t know the people who live there by name but they are a really nice family, I couldn’t believe it.”

Another neighbour described the family as ‘lovely’ and said they mainly kept themselves to themselves.

It is understood the woman’s family owned a shop nearby. They are being supported by specialist officers.

Fellow business owners in the community said they were shocked to hear the news.

Khalid Mahmood, owner Ashton Balti house, said: “I’ve been here 10 to 12 years. They are a wonderful family. It’s very sad.”

Detectives said they do not believe anyone else was involved in the tragedy but are urging anyone with further information to come forward to police.

Sgt Lee Westhead, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation of Unit, said: “This is an awful set of circumstances where a family have lost their loved one. “We are currently working to establish the cause of this incident and we don’t believe anyone else is involved. “However, we need to speak to more witnesses and are currently talking to neighbours and those on the street at the time of the incident.” Anyone with any information should call police on 0161 856 4741 quoting incident number 1218 of 8 October 2018.
