Sancho says the move from City was for his career

- By LIAM CORLESS

JADON Sancho has said he left City to join Borussia Dortmund for the good of his career.

The 18-year-old moved to the Bundesliga last season after two years in the City academy - despite having reached a verbal agreement with the Blues over a new and improved contract just weeks earlier.

At the time of his departure, City manager Pep Guardiola said: “We did absolutely everything but I think it was not the salary, maybe he thought he would get more minutes at Dortmund and I can understand that.

“He has to know, the family has to know and especially the managers have to know we had a lot of confidence in him.”

The deal offered to Sancho at City would have seen him become the club’s highest-paid academy player but he ended up plumping for an £8m transfer to Dortmund instead.

His fine form in Germany has earned him a call-up to the senior England squad for the Three Lions’ fixtures against Croatia tonight and Spain next week.

“Moving away from home was the biggest challenge,” said Sancho.

“Leaving my mum and my sisters behind, I miss them a lot.

“But I wanted to do what was best for me, and that was what I did,” he said.

“It was very tough, especially [missing] my mum.

“But if you really believe in yourself, you have to do what’s best for you.

“I’m now with my dad in Germany in an apartment. Not everyone is comfortable moving from home. If you’re ready to play abroad and you believe in yourself, why not?”

The majority of City’s fans want to see their club re-sign Sancho for next season.

In a poll conducted by M.E.N. Sport, more than three-fifths of City fans said they want Sancho to return to Manchester to link back up with former team-mate Phil Foden.
