CENTRE TAKES DUBIOUS HONOUR
A BACK-street is Greater Manchester’s most dangerous junction.
New data shows the vast majority of injury or death-causing crashes in the region don’t take place on major trunk roads or dual carriageways, but on streets with a low speed limit.
The figures show there were five accidents, involving a total of 11 vehicles which saw 10 people injured, at the junction of York Street and Fountain Street in the city centre – behind Piccadilly Gardens and the City Tower.
The ‘league of shame’ is based on government analysis of more than 100,000 road traffic collisions in Britain in 2017 in which people were either killed or injured.
While the majority of the injuries at the junction were classed as minor, one of the collisions – at 9.15pm on November 22 – saw one person seriously hurt.
The other incidents at the junction were on January 8, July 9, November 1 and November 4.
There were two junctions in Greater Manchester that saw four casualtycausing collisions apiece in 2017.
One was in Trafford, at the intersection of the A560 Shaftesbury Avenue and Thorley Lane, in Timperley.
One of the four collisions there – on October 27 at 1.05pm – saw one person seriously injured. The other three saw a total of six people suffer slight injuries.
The final blackspot was at the crossroads of major roads Wilbraham Road and Wilmslow Road in student heartland of Fallowfield.
One of the incidents there, on September 15, saw one person seriously injured. The other three incidents saw slight injuries only.
There were a total of 1,054 collisions in the city in 2017 that ended with someone getting hurt or killed.
Of those, 863 (82 per cent) took place on a road with a 30mph speed limit.
A further 100 took place in a 20mph zone, 61 in a 40mph zone, and 11 in a 50mph zone. Thursday was the most common day for accidents, with 173. Sunday was the least common, with 129. Some 713 – or roughly two-thirds –took place in daylight.
Nationally, the junction with the worst safety record in Britain in 2017 was in Southwark in London.
There were a total of 12 injury-causing accidents at the junction of the A202 Queens Road and Meeting House Lane.
