Girl, 17, raped in woodland

INVESTIGAT­ION LAUNCHED INTO ATTACK NEAR RIVER

AN investigat­ion has been launched after a teenage girl was raped in woodland.

The 17-year-old was attacked near Cavendish Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, on Tuesday night.

She is now receiving specialist support. A wooded area close to the River Tame and Asda was taped off yesterday morning.

Witnesses reported seeing forensic officers at the scene. A spokesman for GMP confirmed an investigat­ion was underway and appealed for anyone with informatio­n to come forward.

The force said in a statement: “Shortly after 10pm on Tuesday, November 6, police were called to reports that a teenager had been raped in a wooded area near Cavendish Street in Ashton-under-Lyne.

“Officers attended and are now providing specialist support to the 17-year-old girl.

“An investigat­ion has been launched and enquiries are ongoing.”
