Another arrest after fire which hurt grandmothe­r

DETECTIVES investigat­ing a fire at a house in Leigh which left a woman fighting for her life have made another arrest.

The victim, a 67-year-old grandmothe­r, suffered lifechangi­ng injuries.

On Tuesday, a 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

He was taken into custody for questionin­g but has since been released under investigat­ion.

The arrest relates to a fire at a house on Montreal Street in Leigh on Tuesday, October 16.

The woman, who was in a critical condition after the fire, remains in hospital but is now in a stable condition.

Andrew Bamford, 37, of no fixed address, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the Leigh fire.

Neil Stanton, 41, of Lower Hall Lane, St Helens, has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

That charge relates to a fire at a house on Mardale Road in Huyton, Merseyside, on Sunday, October 14, which is being treated as linked to a fire at the house on Montreal Street.

Two men - aged 19 and 22 - who were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the Leigh fire on Tuesday, October 23, have been released with no further action taken.

A 22-year-old man who was arrested on Thursday, October 25, on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder has been bailed pending further enquiries.
